Ranunculus Care: How to Keep Them Alive Longest

Water depth is the rule that matters most, and it is the one nobody mentions. Ranunculus stems are hollow and soft. They turn to mush in a deep vase of stale water long before the flowers are finished.
How long do cut ranunculus last?
Seven days or more on our bench, which is longer than most spring flowers manage. I have had them go eleven days in February and five in a warm September room.
No university trial I could find publishes a vase life figure for ranunculus, so treat seven days as our own count rather than a laboratory number. What the research does cover is the handling that gets you there.
How do you care for cut ranunculus?

Why do ranunculus stems go soft?
Because the stem is hollow and thin-walled, so it takes on water along its whole submerged length. Deep water and stale water both accelerate the rot.
Our bench rule is a few inches of water, changed daily, in a rinsed vase. Cut with a sharp blade rather than scissors, which crush the hollow stem and close it.
Can you refrigerate ranunculus overnight?
Yes, and it buys you days. Oklahoma State Extension puts the holding range at 32 to 35F, and notes that flowers held at 41F may deteriorate up to four times faster than those at 32F.
A domestic refrigerator sits warmer than that and holds fruit, so use it only for a night and clear the fruit out first. In a Los Angeles August I move stems to the cooler at the studio rather than leaving them on a bench near a window.
Why do ranunculus stems curve?
Because they keep growing after cutting and lean toward light. A bunch that stood straight on Monday will be reaching by Thursday.
That is the flower behaving normally, and it is one reason we like them. Turn the vase a half turn each day if you want them straighter.
When are ranunculus in season in Los Angeles?
Winter into spring is their moment in California. Field-grown stems reach the flower market around December, run strong through February and March, and taper in May.
UC Master Gardeners describe them as cool season flowers that bloom in California until late April or so. That timing is a gift for Los Angeles, because it covers the months when the garden outside is quiet.
