Ranunculus Care: How to Keep Them Alive Longest
Ranunculus last seven days or more, longer than most spring flowers, if you keep them in shallow clean water that you change every day or two, give the stems a fresh angled cut, and set them somewhere cool and out of direct sun. The one rule that matters most is water depth. Their stems are hollow and soft, and they turn to mush in a deep vase of stale water long before the flowers are finished.
How to keep ranunculus alive longest
- Shallow water. A few inches is enough. Deep water softens the stems.
- Change it daily if you can, every second day at minimum, and rinse the vase each time.
- Re-cut at an angle with a sharp blade, not scissors that crush the hollow stem.
- Nothing below the waterline. Strip any leaves that would sit in the water.
- Cool and shaded. Direct afternoon sun in Los Angeles will finish them in a day.
- Away from fruit, which releases ethylene and ages the blooms early.
Why do the stems curve?
Ranunculus stems keep growing after they are cut and they lean toward light, so a bunch that stood straight on Monday will be curving and reaching by Thursday. That is the flower behaving normally, and it is the reason we like them. If you want them straighter, turn the vase a half turn each day so no one side gets all the light.
When are ranunculus in season?
Winter into spring is their moment in California. Field-grown stems start arriving around December, run strong through February and March, and taper off in May as the weather warms. That timing is a gift for Los Angeles, because it covers the months when the garden outside is quiet. Our stems are hand-selected at the Los Angeles Flower Market in the Downtown Flower District in the morning and arranged the same day, so a ranunculus reaches you with almost its full vase life ahead of it.
