What Is Garden-Style (European) Floral Design?
Garden-style floral design, sometimes called European style, is a loose, natural, asymmetrical way of arranging flowers so they look gathered from a garden rather than assembled in a shop. It is textural and airy, full of line and movement, with stems that lean and arch and reach, and deliberate space between them. It is the opposite of a tight, domed bouquet, and it is the approach every arrangement we make grows from.
What garden-style means
The idea is to let the flowers behave like flowers. Instead of forcing every stem to the same height in a symmetrical dome, garden-style follows each bloom's natural gesture: a rose that nods, a ranunculus on a curving stem, a branch that breaks the outline. The result reads as effortless, though it takes a trained hand to make looseness look intentional rather than accidental.
How it differs from a classic bouquet
A classic florist bouquet is often round, symmetrical, and densely packed, every flower facing out, little space between them. Garden-style keeps negative space, mixes textures and heights, and works with an asymmetrical silhouette. One is orderly and uniform; the other is alive and a little wild. Both have their place, but the garden-style piece tends to look more like a piece set for a room than a gift in a cone.
