What Flowers Are in Season Each Month in Los Angeles
Adore Flowers buys by the month in Los Angeles: ranunculus and anemone January through March, sweet pea and lilac March into May, peony late April to early June. Then dahlias to October, chrysanthemum and marigold to November, and amaryllis in December.
No month at the Los Angeles Flower Market is empty, but every month is different, and the difference decides what is freshest and what lasts. This is the calendar we buy against, with the bloom windows the calendar rests on. Weather moves it by a week or two in either direction.
What is in season from January to March?
January. Ranunculus and anemone arrive in force, with tulips, paperwhites and narcissus, camellia, hellebore, and citrus foliage that scents a room.
February. Peak ranunculus and anemone, the first sweet pea, and yellow mimosa. Flowering branches begin, quince and early cherry, which is when arrangements can start reaching.
March. Sweet pea comes into its own next to stock, freesia, lilac, late tulips, and the first garden roses of the year.
What is in season from April to June?
April. The showiest month. Garden roses fill out, lilac and delphinium and iris arrive, California poppies appear, and the first peonies land late in the month.
May. Peony season proper, the shortest and most requested window we have, with garden roses at their fullest, foxglove and delphinium. The first dahlias appear at the end of the month.
In six years I have never had a May where peony lasted as long as people hoped. Ask early.
June. The last peonies pass in the first week or two. Hydrangea, lisianthus, scabiosa and dahlias take over as summer settles in.
What is in season from July to September?
July. Dahlias, zinnia, sunflower, cosmos, celosia and hydrangea, in the saturated color the season is for.
August. Dahlias at their peak, from dinner-plate heads to small pompons, with amaranth trailing and tuberose for scent. This is the month I buy tightest, because everything opens faster than it should.
September. The richest month for dahlias, deepening in color, joined by the first chrysanthemums, celosia and marigold.
What is in season from October to December?
October. Chrysanthemum and marigold carry the month while the last dahlias hold on, with seed heads, berried branches and turning foliage adding texture.
November. Chrysanthemum continues, pepperberry and the first evergreens arrive, amaryllis begins, and early ranunculus quietly returns.
December. Amaryllis, paperwhites, hellebore, tulips, fragrant evergreens, and the ranunculus and anemone that run into the new year.
When does each of these stems actually bloom?
Bloom seasons for eight stems we buy often, as recorded by university extension programs. Greenhouse and imported supply widens some of these windows at the market.

Which month is best for flowers in Los Angeles?
April and May for spring abundance, August and September for dahlias at their richest. Those are the months when the market gives you the most for $150.
December is the other good one, though for scent and structure rather than color. Paperwhites and citrus foliage do more for a room than most people expect.
How much does the calendar actually move?
A week or two in either direction, most years. A cool spring pushes peony later, and a warm autumn keeps dahlias going into November.
That is why we treat this as a guide rather than a promise. If a specific stem matters for a specific date, tell us early and we will buy toward it or say plainly that it will not be there.
How should you order in any given month?
Ask for designer's choice and name the date. We buy by hand each morning and design from what is best that day.
